Frequency Analysis of the Vowels in Cantonese from 50 Male and 50 Female Speakers
نویسنده
چکیده
The purpose of the study is to obtain measurements of the formant frequencies of the 7 long vowels [i... y... E... {... a... O... u...] in the (C)V: syllables and 7 half-long vowels [i y E { a O u] in the (C)V:S syllables, and 4 short vowels [I å ∏ U] in the (C)VS syllables in Cantonese. Results show that (1) in the F1/F2 plane the half-long vowels except [a] are centralized relative to the long vowels; (2) the center Fvalues for [I å U] are similar to those for [E... a... O...], similar to what is reported in Ladefoged and Maddieson (1996); (3) both (1) and (2) are true for the male and female speakers; and (4) for both the long and half-long vowels, the distance between the mid vowels and the high vowels in the F1/F2 plane is larger than the distance between the mid vowels and the low vowel [a] for the female speakers, but for the male speakers the distances are similar.

Title Vowels of Hong Kong English: from an acoustic perspective
The present study investigated how the vowel system of the first language (Cantonese) affects the acquisition of vowels of a second language. Forty native Cantonese-speaking adults (20 males and 20 females), with ages between 19 years 4 months and 26 years 10 months were recruited. Data from the first and second formant frequencies indicated that, for both female and male speakers, production o...
متن کاملArticulatory-Spectral-Temporal Relations in Cantonese Vowels
This paper investigates the articulatory-spectral-temporal relations in the long [iː uː aː] and mediumlong [i u a] point vowels in Cantonese, through analyses of (i) the tongue positions in the oral cavity by means of the Electromagnetic Midsagittal Articulography (EMMA AG500) and (ii) the corresponding formant frequencies for the vowels using the speech analysis software, Computerized Speech L...
متن کاملAcoustic Analysis and Perception of Cantonese Vowels Produced by Profoundly Hearing Impaired Adolescents
This study investigated mid-vocalic F1 and F2 frequencies as cues to the perception of three Cantonese vowels (/a/, /i/, /Á/) in monosyllabic words produced by ten profoundly hearing impaired and ten normal hearing adolescents. For the control group, there were significant differences in F1 and F2 frequencies among the three vowels as expected. In contrast, the hearing impaired speakers did not...
متن کاملGender-related Frequency Characteristics in Children’s Speech
This study investigates the two frequency characteristics, F0 and F1F2, of the speech of Cantonese children, male and female, of nine age groups from 4 to 12. The F0 data on the Cantonese tones [55 33 22] from children show that (i) the patterns of the age-related decrease in F0 are similar between male and female children before age 12; (ii) at age 12, there is a large drop in F0 in male child...
